Behind the Camera
Denea Reaves
She started with a Kodak 110 and cube flashes. Then came twenty years, nine months, and eleven
days in the United States Army — a career that sent her around the world and taught her how to
read a room in about four seconds.
That's the part that matters when your two-year-old is done, your teenager is over it, and your
husband would rather be anywhere else. Denea has been doing this for over a decade with a Fine
Arts degree behind her and an archive that's crossed into the terabytes.
Killeen is home. Fort Cavazos families, Central Texas families, first-timers who've never had a
real portrait made — that's who walks through the door, and good work shouldn't be reserved for
people who can afford a studio in Austin.
